A Record of Ignored Abuse

Practically all of these disclosed incidents fell outside of the statute of limitations, making it unclear how many abusers were in fact charged. According to the report, an in-house list was kept.

The report claims that a key Southern Baptist official was credibly implicated of sexual assault only 1 month after finishing his two-year stretch as the convention’s president. Additionally, Johnny Hunt, a widely known Georgia Southern Baptist preacher and senior vice president of the SBC’s missions arm, was credibly accused of abusing a fellow congregant during a 2010 holiday in Panama City Beach, FL. The North American Mission Board president claimed he was uninformed of the accusations prior to Hunt resigning on May 13. The report additionally names 3 previous presidents of the convention, a former vice president, and the previous head of the SBC’s administrative arm as prominent SBC officials who aided in covering for and even motivated alleged abusers.

One victim talked about being treated with hostility as she claimed she was sexually abused by a youth pastor. The accused pastor served in multiple Southern Baptist churches in numerous states. At a meeting with the SBC leaders in 2007, a member of the Exec Committee “turned his back to her during her speech and another chortled.”

Accountability in the Southern Baptist Convention
